Alan Gibson

Founder & developer

I started coding as a teenager in the 80's when personal computers were just starting to take off, writing simple programs with BASIC on an Oric 1 and Acorn Electron. I went on to study electronics and computing at university before embarking on a career as a software developer in the early 90's.

Now, with more than 20 years of professional experience, the single most important thing that continues to drive me is seeing solutions that work: solutions that add value to the organisations that operate them; solutions that satisfy the people that use them.

So I continually champion agile, lightweight, people-focused engineering and management processes – because I believe they are most likely to deliver excellent, working solutions.

And I believe that good developers transcend technology trends, recognise that there is no such thing as a “one size fits all” solution and pick the right tools for the job at hand. That means embracing polyglot languages, frameworks, databases and environments.

Finally, I am convinced that integrity and honesty are as important as technical excellence and the standards and values I strive for in my personal life apply equally to my work.

Responsive design

A web application built with HTML, CSS & Javascript will work on mobile devices. But that doesn't mean it will look good or that it will provide a great user experience on those devices.

Responsive design makes your pages look good on all devices (desktops, tablets, and phones) by using HTML and CSS to resize, hide, shrink, enlarge, or move the content or present it in a different way that is more appropriate for the device.

A web application should work and look great on every device!

Projects

A selection of recent projects ...

A social supermarket

In 2017 Vineyard Compassion was selected to establish and run a social supermarket as a pilot project in the community. Rather than settling for a simple, walk-in shopping experience, Vineyard Compassion approached Causeway Coding to explore the possibility of providing an online "Click and collect" shopping service for members.

As well as the more obvious features, the solution was designed to support a subscription based, rather than a cash-based, approach to shopping. Another unusual feature was support for the "Eatwell Plate" - a categorization system intended to promote healthy eating and informed purchases.

A community call to action

Causeway Coast Vineyard is a church with a difference, and one of the things they do each year is encourage people to get involved in a number of projects that benefit their local communities. Typical projects include school maintenance activities, beach cleans, litter picks and much more. The aim is to give back 10,000 hours of community service during the month of July.

In 2017 Causeway Coding developed an online solution to help Causeway Coast Vineyard coordinate project sign-ups and volunteer commitments as well as to improve project supervision and improve resource allocation.

A social enterprise

The Vineyard Compassion Link Plus Social Enterprise gives people an opportunity to gain skills and improve their employability through participation in a supportive, mentor-led working environment producing firewood and kindling that are sold to the public. Every purchase or donation helps support more projects that tackle food poverty, problem debt, unemployment and addiction.

In 2017 Vineyard Compassion approached Causeway Coding to develop a solution to take both online and walk-in orders, coordinate deliveries and improve stock management.

Cloud computing

Everybody is talking about "The Cloud", but what exactly is it?

Unless you are a very large organisation you probably don't have your own web servers, database servers ... or any servers! But to get your application up and running you need servers, so where is your application going to run?

Organisations like Amazon, Microsoft & IBM own buildings the size of warehouses that are full of servers so, rather than buying your own, you can rent one of theirs. You could share that server with a number of other customers, making your rental costs smaller. You could rent a database or a folder ... or even just a little slice of processing time on a server. That's the cloud!

The great thing about the cloud is that you can start small, just pay for what you need now, and then scale up as your application grows in the future.
